Today, a sort of reexamination of self takes place for many of those fighting in Stalingrad.

As the soldiers drink and muse that “The epic of Stalingrad is over,” (p. 662) they soon must come to terms with the unfathomable amount of damage done to their country, the loved ones lost, and the inevitable rebuilding.
